Campaign for Affordable Housing Preservation
Through its Campaign for Affordable Housing Preservation, Southwest Boston CDC has sought to prevent more than 1,700 affordable rental units (roughly 10% of all rental apartments in Hyde Park and Roslindale) with “expiring use” restrictions and project-based Section 8 contracts from converting to market rate housing. These buildings have received massive federal subsidies over the last 30-40 years on the condition they remain affordable. Over the next several years, up to six different housing developments in Hyde Park and Roslindale will face the loss of affordability if their owners opt to ‘go market’ when the contracts expire.
Southwest Boston has worked with residents at two developments in Roslindale - the Florence and Weld Park Apartments - to protect the loss of affordability in their buildings. We also advocated for legislation passed in November 2009 that requires owners of affordable housing with expiring use restrictions to offer properties for sale to non-profit developers and provides limited protections to residents of expiring use properties.
